Travel statistics
In 1990, 8,278,586 tourists visited Croatia (of which 4,950,071 foreign) who realised 51,908,721 overnights (33,838,130 by foreign guests). In the next decade, war, change of political system and change from socialist to the free market economy, affected tourism figures. In 1992 they fall to the lowest level - 2,135,000 tourists realised 11,005,000 overnights. But, already by 2000, 7,137,000 tourists and their 39,183,000 overnights were registered.
Since 2000, due to the repositioning of Croatian tourism, positive image, improvement of products, catering facilities and infrastructure, Croatian tourism has had a steady increase. In 2008, 11,260,807 tourists (9,415,105 foreign) realised 57,103,494 overnights (50,625,522 by foreign tourists). It is important to notice that, for different reasons, some 26% of total hotel facilities used until 1991, are still out of use.
The figures for 2009 will be similar to those for 2008 - with only 3% fewer arrivals and 1% fewer overnights. In 2009, most overnights have been realised by tourists who came from Germany (21,2%), Slovenia (11,9%), Italy (10,9%), Austria (8,5%), Czech Republic (8,2%) and followed by tourists from Poland (5,6%), the Netherlands (5,2%) and Slovakia (4,3%).
In 2009, 67,39% of travellers to Croatia arranged their own holidays, while 32,61% guests used tour operator or travel agency services. Between 70 and 80% of these packages and bookings were organised or serviced by UHPA member agencies.
