National & Natural Parks
Croatia prides itself on its clear environment and rich flora and fauna. Today some 7.5% of Croatian territory is protected within the national park system or under other regional protection. The national parks include the archipelagos of Brijuni and Kornati, Island of Mljet, Paklenica Canyons, Mt. Risnjak and Mt. North Velebit, the Plitvice lakes area and the Krka river area.
Nature parks include the mountain ranges of Mt. Velebit, Mt. Biokovo, Mt. Ucka, Mt. Medvednica and Mt. Papuk, the hilly region of Zumberak, the flood plain of Lonjsko polje, the intact wet lands of Kopacki rit area, the Telascica cove on the island of Dugi Otok and the Vransko lake.
Hikers and mountaineers who visit the numerous mountains can avail themselves of eighty-odd mountain lodges and huts. Particular hiking attractions include the mountains in Gorski Kotar with the Risnjak National Park, the Velebit mountain range with the Paklenica National Park, the mountains close to major cities, tourist destinations on the coast and islands.
Specialised organisers of adventure tours, team building packages and different sports activities located on the coast and city of Zagreb organise regular activity and scenic tours and on request tours in the areas of national and natural parks and eco-tours. Agencies situated in the continental part of the country organise trips and tours mainly to the protected mountains and areas in the northern part of the country and other tours on request.
